In a match made in sustainability heaven, Competent Boards has joined 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses that are addressing our planet’s most pressing environmental issues. As part of that affiliation, we are donating 1% of annual sales to support those nonprofit organizations that are focused on the environment.

The mission of 1% for the Planet aligns closely with ours at Competent Boards: educating board members and senior business leaders on how to address the environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and opportunities that their companies face. They can then make better-informed decisions that give our planet and our children a chance of a future not ravaged by the devastating effects of the climate crisis.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Competent Boards to our global family,” says Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet. “Currently, only 3% of total philanthropy goes to the environment with only 5% of that coming from businesses. Our growing network of business members is doing its valuable part to increase giving and support on-the-ground outcomes.”

Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet is a global organization that aims to ensure our planet and future generations thrive. It makes environmental giving easy and effective through partnership advising, impact storytelling and third-party certification. The thousands of 1% for the Planet members have raised over $300 million to date to support nonprofits around the globe.
