Datuk Shireen Muhiudeen,

Founder, Corston-Smith Asset Management, Ex Chairman, Stock Exchange of Malaysia, Ex Executive Council Member, Economic Action Council (Malaysia)

Datuk Shireen Muhiudeen is the founder of Corston-Smith Asset Management. She set up Corston-Smith in 2004 after 12 years with the Malaysian arm of global insurance giant AIG Investment Corporation.

Corston-Smith focuses on ESG principles within the ASEAN region and has been a United Nations Principles of Responsible Investment signatory since 6th May 2008. The ethos of Corston-Smith’s investment process is to encourage the adoption of international ESG standards of best practices in our portfolio companies.

In all, she has more than 32 years of focused fund management expertise. In recognition of her work in the industry, she was named one of the 25 most influential women in the Asia-Pacific region for asset management by Asian Investor, a regional publication, in June 2011 and in March 2014, she was honoured by Forbes Asia as one of the 50 Asia’s Power Businesswomen 2014.

Datuk Shireen accepts speaking engagements whenever she can to reinforce her commitments, such as at the John Hopkins University Global Conference On Women In The Boardroom (2012), and at the 2012 Annual Meetings of The Boards of Governors of The International Monetary Fund and The World Bank Group.

She was a member of IFC’s working group for the establishment of the Philippine Stock Exchange’s Maharlika Board, a distinct trading board for companies with world-class corporate governance practices. She was a member of the International Advisory Panel for Labuan International Business and Financial Centre. She was an Independent Director and Chaired the Governance Committee of a public listed port from 2011 to 2015. She was also a Director of a Foreign Bank from December 2013 to February 2016. She was also Chairman of the Risk Management Committee, a member of the Nomination & Remuneration Committee and Board Member of a Publicly Listed local Bank.

She builds on her ESG investment views consistently, notably with her monthly columns.. On top of that, she and her team at Corston-Smith have published a handbook on personal finance for young working adults. Titled ‘Learn To Make Sense Of Your Money – What They Don’t Tell You When You First Start Work’, it is available in English and Bahasa Malaysia.

This equally avid sportswoman is no stranger to international representation, having represented Malaysia at the Junior Wimbledon and Melbourne Juniors tennis championships. In recent years, she has been participating in ocean swims. She has also served on her country’s Sports Advisory Council, the Board of Tourism Malaysia, and was a member of the EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Financial Services Committee.
